What kind of art have you turned to in this past year?
I don't know if I've turned to art, but it's definitely been there to catch me. Honestly, anything and everything. I've sought comfort in the familiar. I've treasured the work that gives me hope, but have equally been fuelled by the work that has lost it. I rewatched lots of dumb TV. I've spent a lot a lot a lot of time on Tiktok. I've loved seeing alternative models for how life could be. Tū Toi Ora and Whānau Mārama left me awe-struck and electrified. I've loved the amazingly portrayed, painfully awkward, hilarious and wretched moments in books like Luster, Real Life, Obit, Minor Feelings and The Office of Historical Corrections. I'm inspired by the artists I've been working with, who are carving space for new conversations. I'm screeching every moment of Succession.

What has changed in your perspective towards your work?
Damn this year has been a ride. Satellites lost its core funding last year. Did I mention that in our interview? So in between working on a few individually-commissioned projects, it's been a period of retreat and reflection.

On a bad day I'd say I lost a lot of confidence in myself this past year, and there were multiple times when I thought about giving up, switching careers, playing it safe. I was telling someone about my year the other day and burst into tears, which was a bit embarrassing because it was a professional interview.

But lately most days are good days, and I feel really lucky to be surrounded by such a supportive community: by people who inspire me, challenge me, nurture me. I was thinking this morning there's a real sense of it being spring: after the turbulence of this past year, it's refreshing to be thinking about new projects. There's a sense of reinvention and hope in the air.

What's changed? That's a TBC. I'm trying to go slower, to act with deeper intentionality, and to make each project I work on a microcosm of a dreamt future. Part of that means figuring out a better work-life balance, but in an industry that's chronically under-resourced and which consistently allows its independent artists to be the first ones off the cliff,.... It's bad math. I've been thinking about the way our sector profits from burn-out and how that needs to change, and I've been working through the ways that my own practices reinforce a culture that sits counter to what I want to see. It's a work in progress. Is there a particular moment this year that you remember?

Like the stranded island scenario, if you knew you were going to be in isolation, what are 3 things you would have planned to have with you?

My phone, my laptop, and my slow cooker.

How did you keep in touch with your peers during isolation/did you?

A lot of facetimes, a lot of Netflix parties, a lot of games. A lot of mutual understanding that sometimes it will take minutes to reply to a text, and other times days or weeks (mostly the latter, sorry to my friends).

What has changed in your perspective towards your work?
I’ve changed my focus towards the things I want to say from a more personal level, involving my practice within the Soka Gakkai International and completing work like the Lup Yuk in my new studio environment. I’m embarking on something very different and new that relates to my background as an office professional, which will focus on the voice and use of language and writing. It is by giving the form the respect it deserves, without contemporising it, that we enable people to be able to connect with it.

Is there a particular moment this year that you remember?

When finalising my lup yuk casts and making the wire baskets, my father was constantly a visual in my head. I can still clearly see him doing this at our home in urban Makaraka. The special moments I remember are that of my father making these wire baskets (pretty roughly I might add) and hanging the lup yuk pieces in the basket and hanging the baskets under the eaves of our carport, waiting patiently for the pork to cure. It hasn't been easy for many during this time, but I am so grateful and lucky to be able to still work in my own bubble in my studio (aka shed).

What kind of art have you turned to in this past year?I’ve been finalising projects I commenced last year as well as taking part in a programme called Wayfind Creative, a programme for artists to give them skills outside the artistic arena. I also started a new collaboration project with Maha Tomo, the Director of Aotearoa Bone and Stone Carving, home of Toi Manawa arts. We have been producing taonga like toki, and small taonga for the marketplace, as well as creating our own designed and carved koauau. The name of our collaboration is Kohatu Marama (meaning stone of light) Collaborative, which you can find on Facebook.

What has changed in your perspective towards your work?

As every year goes by I find myself becoming more of the designer I want to be. I don’t know if I’ve changed my perspective towards my work apart from the occasional cringe or wonder you get when you can’t imagine yourself making work that good. I’ve tried to be more mindful of where all these temporary works go after they’ve lived there life asking what can be preserved, what can have another life and what can get recycled.

What kind of art have you turned to in this past year?

I’d be kidding if I haven’t just consumed television as a way to turn off from this year and it’s challenges. Beyond teaching, work and TV there hasn’t been too many chances to see art. When I do get out l’ve turned to the work of Owen Connors, Claudia Kogachi’s paintings, Turumeke Harrington’s sculptural objects and installations, and Ruby White incredible instagram of cooking and ceramics.

Is there a particular moment this year that you remember?

Working with the Proudly Asian Theatre and Handpulled Collective team on their recent production Pork and Poll Taxes. It was such an incredible experience and filled with love, generosity and support. I felt completely held as a creative. It truly felt like I was part of a community of people making, learning and developing as a designer.

Like the stranded island scenario, if you knew you were going to be in isolation, what are 3 things you would have planned to have with you?

A comfy couch, slippers and a ergonomic desk chair

How did you keep in touch with your peers during isolation/did you?

I’m a regular introverted millennial and mainly say hello in my emails or texts. I’m constantly at the end of a voice call teaching 4 days a week and in lockdown I really try and preserve moments of quiet when I can. However, I’ve loved calling my mum recently who is teaching me Cebuano. I’m not always great at keeping at a regular schedule but when we do talk it’s a moment of reconnection to not only my mum but to my culture.

What has changed in your perspective towards your work?

The pandemic has definitely made me slow down and reconsider my work patterns since we shot the video. I read Rosabel Tan's interview for the series, and I think like her, this year for me was full of reflection, contemplation and pauses on aspects of my work to rethink where I would be headed in the next few years.

I would say the inability to hold in-person events, workshops or even communal get-togethers at multiple points in the year really got to me, and impacted what I was hoping to do for Migrant Zine Collective this year. There were points where I felt like I was about to give up, or realised I couldn't sustain the collective due to a lack of funding, particularly while I was putting together our two publications "Anti-Racist Soup" and "Recipes for Resistance." I realised a lot of the time I was burnt out, and struggling to keep up with myself or others.

So I'd say what's changed is that I've learnt to care for myself and love myself more, to approach my capacity more honestly, and feel okay with making mistakes or saying no to opportunities. I'm actually writing this from Guam right now, an island in Micronesia, the pace here is so much different to Aotearoa, and its given me time to be more intentional with my work.

Like the stranded island scenario, if you knew you were going to be in isolation, what are 3 things you would have planned to have with you?My phone, laptop and parent's soup pot.

What kind of art have you turned to in this past year?

I'm not sure if I would say I've personally turned to art at any point of the year, the past few years have felt kind of stagnant for me in terms of creating as an illustrator, but I've definitely dedicate a lot of time into designing the zines we publish. I especially loved putting together the cover for our recent zine "Asian Women Talk About..." in collaboration with my talented friend and Migrant Zine Collective organiser Shivani Narsai! The art that's inspired me the most though the past year are all the collages and submissions made during our workshops or from our zine call outs, the rawness and DIY aspects of those remind me of what I truly value in creating; and that art can be therapeutic, healing and made by anyone and everyone. Another aspect of art I've loved are all the collages, illustration and videos from my Master's project.

How did you keep in touch with your peers during isolation/did you?
I can't say kept in touch a lot with my peers during isolation, I did video call with friends a couple of times but I felt quite fatigued with all the online work and Zoom meetings. I think this pandemic has changed communication for a lot of us.

What has changed in your perspective towards your work?

To have more fun with it. I've been doing music for a while now and I sort of started taking the process for granted a little, I felt really uninspired for a while too. Just getting back to how my friends and I used to make music when we were younger, just for the fun of it rather than overthinking things like 'will this stream well?'
What kind of art have you turned to in this past year?
A lot of house music. When I first started putting out music seriously it had house electronic influences but I never truly explored that sound. I'm getting way more into it now and having a lot of fun doing so.

Is there a particular moment this year that you remember?

My homie got married and we had our whole friend group reunited for it. Everyone's getting busier and doing cool things in their own lives which is awesome, but it was also cool to just have us all together again.
Like the stranded island scenario, if you knew you were going to be in isolation, what are 3 things you would have planned to have with you?
2 bottles of Jameson and a new pair of football boots. I bought a new pair before lockdown but somehow lost the left boot.

How did you keep in touch with your peers during isolation/did you?We have group chats where we meme and would also watch football together on discord. Ronaldo coming back to Manchester United was a very very big deal for us. My friend and I also started working on music together which is cool, we'd bounce beats and moodboards between each other.

What has changed in your perspective towards your work?

Now that I'm in my thirties I'd definitely like to 'finish' more work rather than just be constantly brainstorming, the clock's ticking! Both helping others make amazing things happen or completing my own personal work, both bring me joy. I think I probably have less of an ego/ perfectionist attitude about it now that it's less about comparing myself to others versus building things to call my own step by step.
What kind of art have you turned to in this past year?
Quite a lot! I think the process of creation inspires me more than the results. Outside of visual art or interactive works, I'm actually super inspired by music and the emotional journey/ process that goes into the creation. I found Kanye West's process of releasing his latest album Donda through a series of work-in-progress listening parties really fascinating. I wish I was brave enough to expose raw unfinished work like that to the world! For my personal work, I've actually really gotten into painting traditionally in inks again.

Is there a particular moment this year that you remember?

Not any one single moment, but now that we're locked down again, I keep going back to memories of spending time with family in person and travelling (visiting friends in Wellington and also going on the Asia New Zealand Foundation's hui to trace Chinese gold mining history in Otago).
Like the stranded island scenario, if you knew you were going to be in isolation, what are 3 things you would have planned to have with you?
I think it would be a bit of a cop out but if I said I'd bring my Computer that'd probably be enough, I definitely have a massive backlog of games, movies and books to go through. Otherwise definitely pen and sketchbook.

What has changed in your perspective towards your work?

With higher stakes around how and where I work - and at the risk of sounding cheesy - I think have a greater sense of gratitude for all the ways people make my work possible. My partner for being so amazing with our kids. My kids for persevering with remote school, and approaching the pandemic with calm and rational thought. My friends for engaging in silly message threads, and commiserating on serious ones. My colleagues for showing me what true respect and collaboration feels like. 2021 was a tough year, but it was also an amazing one for me. I released my first Hollywood film and a TV series I’m incredibly proud of. I get to travel for work on a heartswell of a Netflix show, with a dream team.

My own knowledge of myself, my ‘gut’ and my instincts has also deepened. I’m not immune to making mistakes, but I have more confidence in the choices I do make. This happens anyway with getting older and gaining experience, but somehow the pandemic puts it in a different light. Maybe with a greater sense of threat or danger, the acknowledgement of good things also becomes sharper in relief. These weird and terrible times help me take joy from certain mundanities, and recontextualise chaos.

In these times, I’m even more aware my work is less empirically important than say, the work of teachers or nurses. On bad days this awareness makes me feel small, but on most days it fortifies my purpose. If I choose to do this work, I have a responsibility to make it count. Obviously I want it to be entertaining and engaging, but it needs to mean something. It should say something in a way that only my team and I can say. This helps me figure out the why and how of my work more simply than before.
How did you keep in touch with your peers during isolation?

I get an inordinate amount of joy from text banter, and sending and receiving exquisitely wry and well-timed audio messages. In terms of commitment and drain, it goes:

Text < Gif/Meme < Audio Message < Audio call < Zoom/WhatsApp vid call/Facetime (please don’t talk to me about Google Hangouts or Microsoft Teams)

Zooms are a commitment, but once I’m there, I do love seeing people in the face and marvelling at how hot and cute we look from a high angle, and how many double chins we can muster from a low angle.

Is there a particular moment this year that you remember?

While isolating in MIQ, I realised HKS on Dominion Road made my favourite Hong Kong dessert in drink form… and my MIQ facility was within delivery range. I think I actually screamed:

Like the stranded island scenario, if you knew you were going to be in isolation, what are 3 things you would have planned to have with you?
As you can see from the photo above, I would have a laptop, a pen, paper and… Oh wait that’s three.
I would have a laptop, a Mango Pomelo Sago dessert 楊枝甘露 and egg waffle 雞蛋仔.

What kind of art have you turned to in this past year?I think like a lot of people, I’ve turned to streaming scripted episodic shows. Some would argue whether they’re art, but I think they are. Starstruck, Mare of Easttown, Sweet Tooth, The Chair, Ted Lasso, White Lotus, Squid Game. These days I’ll be pottering in the kitchen and lines from Succession will tapdance into my head. “Tee hee. Camel’s labia.” I’ll murmur. “Hurr hurr. Throwing cake batter at a brick wall”. Best stealth comedy ever.

I’ve found some time to read books, which is a joy. I finally read Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential. I’m now reading David Sedaris’ The Best of Me. I can hear his voice as I read, which is a delight. I can hear his Billie Holiday impression.

I’ve travelled a little recently and there’s been a lot of waiting in queues, so I’ve turned to podcasts. This American Life is a my mainstay - I’ve listened to that for over a decade now. Once I’ve run out of TALs to listen to, I might listen to podcasts about screencraft like cinematography or scriptwriting. I enjoyed Angella Dravid’s podcast Love, Rock Bottom and other Triumphs.

What has changed in your perspective towards your work?

Balance. There’s been a necessary leveling out between work and life, and work doesn’t hold the same value to me as it once did, in the sense that life and living now hold greater priority. I still show up with my fullest presence and attention, however the purpose of life now feels rightly geared towards self work. Less about what I’m doing and more about how I’m being, while I’m doing.
How did you keep in touch with your peers during isolation?

I think for me this lockdown it was art that kept my friends and I together. Helping each other with self tapes and auditions, which always turned into long and nourishing conversation. Grateful for technology in this regard, for soul connections and the craft that encourages us as artists/human beings to stay engaged and curious about life.

Is there a particular moment this year that you remember?

A particular moment during breakfast on a weekend away, camping in the Pinnacles (Coromandel), with my partner. That moment felt so alive with meaning, life and gentle love.Like the stranded island scenario, if you knew you were going to be in isolation, what are 3 things you would have planned to have with you?
100% my partner; sneakers and a yoga mat.

What kind of art have you turned to in this past year?I’ve stepped well clear of dancing over the past two years, and my attention is very much focused on the art of screen acting. For leisure my attention has always been closely skewed towards music and literature, and more so now documentary films.

What has changed in your perspective towards your work?

I’ve got a product design - industrial kind not digital - background so I’m really curious about systems. With products it’s about how things are made, the thinking process behind it and the wider systems the product functions within and has an impact on. Thinking about Covid-19... it’s been such a system disruptor and across a lot of aspects of life. It’s brought out vulnerabilities we have in ourselves, communities, industries, businesses and organisations and of course in the creative sector too. In a lot of ways it’s a situation we all haven’t had to deal with before and there’s that confronting thought of how do we even deal with this?? It’s a lot to take in! We’re all dealing with it in different ways and it’s become important to be conscious of that when engaging with people and in business.
Personally, it’s been a struggle to work at times. Feeling unmotivated, tired, mind-elsewhere, down, lonely, all sorts! I tried to become observant of that and see what kind of mood or vibe I’m in and match doing work and other things to that. So working to or with your mood. It sometimes worked haha

For work at The Open Fort - with the first lockdown, we had projects go from ‘it’s happening’ (pre-covid), ‘let’s see what happens and wait a moment’ (at the start of lockdown) to ‘let’s put it on hold’ and eventually ‘cancelled’... So, when it comes to designing and delivering activations and engagements now we also devise variations to go with the alert levels or how it could work across them. Like hands-off and hands-on versions. Every project now has an additional creative challenge flex in there.

Overall... perspective wise in regards to creative work - and actually creative outputs in general - I feel it’s even more important for there to be projects and opportunities for people to express and decompress themselves in healthy ways, share how we’re doing and artforms to help express and articulate that and lastly, create moments to enjoy and appreciate what we can!
How did you keep in touch with your peers during isolation?

I sure did! It would have been absolutely unbearable and isolating to another level if I couldn’t do that. I live by myself and in hindsight it would have been more comfortable to be elsewhere! There were phone calls, video calls, every weekday work calls with Toby, shared movie watching, message groups, games online especially drawing ones and video games.

Thanks to everyone for all the contact and connecting moments throughout all of this!

Is there a particular moment this year that you remember?

My birthday this year because it was a complete contrast to last year’s. Last year it took place during the first lockdown in my tiny apartment where I live by myself. Though there were video and phone calls it still felt a bit of a downer to not be around people. This year though it was filled with family, friends, loved ones and ice cream! The best things in life. Going from one extreme to the other and with the overall circumstances we’re all in makes me really appreciative of moments where we can come together in person.Like the stranded island scenario, if you knew you were going to be in isolation, what are 3 things you would have planned to have with you?
A touch screen laptop, noise cancelling bluetooth headphones and a game controller.

What kind of art have you turned to in this past year? It’s great that art takes so many forms so I’ll be wide in my response to this question and share some of the creative content and mediums I’ve been getting into.

TV Shows! I watched through a few which I know people have recommended to me for yeeeaars like Community. I purposely try not to catch up on shows because I know what I’m like - I will binge.
Pop Music! I really enjoy listening to music and there’s really great and well made pop songs coming out from around the world. However, because I almost only listen to mixtapes on Soundcloud I have no idea who I’m listening to anymore and often there’s not a lot of pop. So, I thought I’d indulge and re-familiarise myself with the genre and I’ll be honest I really enjoyed it!

Photo Essays! I love this format for storytelling and news reporting. I’ve been following BBC’s ‘News in Pictures’ for over 10 years. You can get a glimpse into a topic, event or circumstance along the vibe of ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. I ended up thinking of ones for me to do during lockdown too after walking almost all the streets within the CBD and making sketches and notes on sites of interest.

And! I’ve been doing a bit of drawing, sketching of product and furniture ideas I have and listening to history podcasts which I’ve really gotten into.
